Should we get married is the question on many young people's mind. It's not a simple question and it's one that many young people both in a relationship and single have to consider and weigh up. Today, marriage is no longer a given. Is is because of the changing views on religion, values, tradition and society's expectations? Is it because of the increase in divorces both of this generation and our parent's?
Ultimately marriage is about love, whilst fear is a significant factor in the equation. It should be simple, right? If you love them and you see yourself with them for the rest of your life, then you get married.
But there are many more important things to consider - Can you live together? Do you have compatible goals?
If you are single, then you fear being with someone and putting yourself out there, but being alone is also scary. If you are with someone, you are plagued by whether they are the right one, will it work and why change things? Are we over-thinking it all? Is it because we are afraid to make mistakes and the idea of failure?
The practicalities of finding the right person make marriage a gigantic step.
We don't stay in the same job, live in the same house or country any more. It is a culture of change, variety, wanting more or better, but is this really better or making us happier?
Like everything in life, there are pros and cons to marriage or being single. There are ups and downs. We need to remember when things get rough that it will not always be rough. Similarly when it is going well, when there is the 'honeymoon phase', then that will also come to an end. There is no perfect.
I like to think of marriage as a business partnership and friendship. Some survive the test of time and others don't weather the storms. Some never really take off.
Relationships are a leap of faith, a belief that you can make it work and ultimately a game of trust.
