Forget your personal trainer, try zumba - the fitness party fad!

It's the phenomenon that gets you fit whilst having fun - shaking your hips like Shakira, mixing salsa steps, Bollywood dancing and sweating like it's raining are all part of the zumba workout. 


What's the zumba fuss about? The dvds cost a fortune (£15 - £25). The class has grown by ten fold in six months and some people are doing it four times a week! It's every un-coordinated girl's nightmare, and the two guys who took part in the class of at least fifty chicks, you were brilliant for taking on the butt and chest wiggling. Lots of the dance moves you will recognise from JLo, Britney and Shakira video clips, so if you are a dancer, you will be totally comfortable with the class.

Fitness - For everyone else, it's a struggle to keep up and you wonder why the instructor is not laughing through it all as we must look ridiculous. It's a high impact class not for the faint hearted, though there are some zumba classes which are about just having fun, this was not one of them, it was part of a gym and the instructor made it very clear this was about losing weight and pushing yourself.

My experience - These arms which are used to doing weight reps felt like they were going to fall off half way. I wondered if I should stop the hop and spin routine because well I haven't done that much turning since childhood when you would make yourself dizzy on purpose. If you were smart like one girl, you would have thought to watch it first before trying. I have to say though that I did find myself smiling through the pain because it was cheeky in its moves. It was a decent workout and I definitely did not need to hop on the treadmill or cross-trainer afterward. In fact my face was red for 15 minutes after the class.

The instructor - She was quite a character, a cross between a boot camp instructor and one of those crazy girls gone wild types who are super confident about slapping their own butt and I'm sure she would have invited every else to slap her butt too except the class was a mixture of Mums and young women who were not the let's smack each other type.So it was limited to slap your own butt and dance like you are a waitress in a bar like Coyote Ugly.

The Fad - Personal trainers, they are so last year. But then zumba is a fad, like yoga, pilates, tae bo and pole dancing. No doubt there'll be another new fitness craze in 6 months, though some experts think zumba will endure.  In the meantime, zumba is in 110,000 locations in 125 countries with over 12 million people doing it. What's Next? Go to a class with a friend or go solo and chat to some one else on their own because it's nice to moan to someone in the 30 second water breaks.
