For the million people that wanted to be a part of the Royal Wedding and wait along the route to Westminster Abbey, it was an early start whether you were woken up by your alarm or Big Ben because you were sleeping on the street. My thoughts turned to Kate in these wee hours of the morning who was likely with hair and makeup artists.
The Night Before
Prince William had made an impromptu appearance and gone out to chat with people outside Clarence House. His PR team apparently were disappointed as if they had known they would have invited more of the media.
The Big Wait
There were kids in costume, with crowns, signs and flags. Some people wore face masks of Will, Kate and other members of the royal family. There was so much anticipation. Android phones had sketchy reception so we didn't have access to the news. Fortunately someone had a radio and could tell us when someone was approaching. When the cars and buses started coming along the mall, everyone cheered, waved flags and snapped photographs. They came and went quickly. Time flew and it was exciting with first William and Harry, Charles and Camilla, the Queen and Prince Phillip and finally Kate. The black horses were beautiful, the bands playing made it even more festive. It was cold that morning and our legs were stiff from standing too.
The Carriage
We caught our first view of the bride and groom. Kate's royal wave which she probably practiced beforehand looked natural and they both looked so happy. This was the big moment for us. The wait had been worthwhile. Watching it later on television, we realised how much security surrounded them. But on the street, they seemed so close and accessible. We thought this was the highlight of the day. We did not expect that there would be so much more to come.
The Road to Buckingham Palace
Walking along the Mall to Buckingham Palace was one of the most exciting parts of the day. There was so much euphoria. The smell of horse manure was strong and it felt much warmer with the sun making brief appearances. It was fun walking on the Mall, where the carriage and cars had driven that morning. The Union Jack flags flying up high were visually stunning. As we neared Buckingham Palace, we couldn't believe how grand it appeared and at times when we stopped moving, we thought that would be as far as we would go. But then we'd inch closer.
When we entered the gates to the Palace, we could not believe it. When we passed the fountain and could see the balcony we were overcome with excitement. We were in line with the news cameras, it was amazing. That morning before we left home, we never thought we'd be able to get so close to it all.
And then we saw the kiss .... continued in Part 2 of Special Prince William and Kate Middleton London Royal Wedding.
I was there too! Had a terrible time getting anywhere NEAR the palace - ended walking right around the back of it - but I managed to get a prime spot for the balcony appearance!
ReplyDeleteHere's my 2 cents on the day, anyway!
