Four days - no complex carbs, can you do it?

No pasta, no bread, no potato. It's tough. I treated myself to a little chocolate each day because I'd be miserable otherwise.

So what has it done? It helps to shrink your stomach and you find that you have less of an appetite.

With the big food fest on the 25th just around the corner, it's important to pre-empt that weight gain and combat the desire to eat more since it's grey outside and you're hiding everything beneath big coats and sweaters.

I've tried detox, maple syrup (ok only once but it was awful), low cal, mega workouts and it is all about discipline.

So what's been in my food diary? Lots of fresh fruit and veg, nuts, eggs, fish, aloe vera tablets to help with cleansing and so much water. No meat, no alcohol, no eating out. And the results? Between one and two kilos.

So this weekend I've indulged a little and the next five days I'll try no pasta, bread and potatoes again. I'll aim for three and anything else is bonus.

Wishing you all well on your pre-Christmas diet adventures.

Love - it's big business

There's a Queen song - Crazy Little Thing Called Love. That intangible, all important concept has become big business. It's not just the greeting card industry and florists, but everything around us that feeds off this desire. We dress, diet, read, watch tv and it's all about love. There's reality tv, online dating and introductory services costing over £10000 which have all tapped into this little thing called love. Have we overcomplicated our lives? How was it that 50 years ago we didn't need them?

I was watching this show called Millionaire Matchmaker. Patti Stanger has a successful business and it's all around that all important thing of finding love.  Sex and the City was about a woman trying to find love. The hit comedy Friends, had Ross and Rachel's will they won't they love affair to keep it going for many years. Some of the greatest books written - Gone with the Wind, Anne of Green Gables, Romeo and Juliet, Pride and Prejudice - they're all about love. Let's not forget the teenage phenomenon of Twilight.

Pubs and bars thrive on it - as it's the place to go to find love. We grow up with fairy tales which are about finding the one. Does it make us unrealistic? Is it just about finding someone you can put up with, especially when you are 75 years old and cranky?

So if you are thinking of a get rich quick scheme, think about love.
