Rupert Murdoch, News Corporation. BSkyB and News of the World - What does the phone hacking scandal mean?

Rupert Murdoch is making news, and this publicity, over the phone hacking scandal, I'm sure he would rather not have. The tide of public opinion has turned and headlines that are there to shock us continue to dominate. Will it drag down not just News of the World, but also News Corporation and BSkyB?

But what does this all mean? Should we be up in arms because companies within his organisation were immoral and committed illegal acts? He is known for being ruthless and he has made the decision to end the News of the World newspaper which has been costly for some no doubt good employees who had nothing to do with the scandal as well as vendors who deal with them. BSkyB is a very lucrative deal for him and News Corp, but then will it also be good for the UK. If we turn him away, will we discourage other multinationals and billionaires from investing here?

I caught one headline which suggested that Rebekah Wade should resign. Her job should not be based on public opinion. It would be like if the press wanted to weigh in on whether you or I deserved to keep our jobs. I think of the recent comments by Sarah Ferguson and Piers Morgan - that journalists print hurtful headlines and articles without considering the consequences or that they are dealing with real people.

Rebekah Wade is no angel, making headlines when her husband, actor, Ross Kemp called the police complaining of assault. The press do turn on their own, afterall, who doesn't want to get rid of their competition. Let's bring down a successful woman, because there isn't a shortage of them, right? Not that I am arguing she should get a pass because she is a woman. I just fail to see how she should be guilty when our justice system is founded on a presumption of innocence and we pride ourselves on fairness and doing right. The press have suggested that she is guilty, given her resignation and now arrest. But let's not forget the politics and pressure for action. She deserves a fair trial.

I'm not a fan or an enemy of Rupert Murdoch, Rebekah Wade or News Corporation, nor do I condone or applaud their actions. It is sickening the revelations that are being made, if they are true, and let's not forget that none of it has yet been substantiated although you would be led to think otherwise. The press is out for blood over the phone hacking scandal, and I can't help but wonder, if the casualties won't just be Rupert Murdoch, News of the World, News Corporation and Rebekah Wade, but the UK because of the possible implications of what we say and do and the decisions that are made as a result.
